Danielsberg is a pimple in the valley that separates Polinik with the main Austrian Alps making Polinik an “ultra prominent peak”. Danielsberg does boast over 100 m prominence but is nothing fancier than a “dumpster dive”. It was still a mystery why Adam and I travelled across half of the globe to bag shitty peaks like this one, but that might explain why we together had bagged over 5000 peaks… In any case we added this into the travel afternoon simply because we had an hour or two to kill. My original plan was to find a McDonald’s to catch up with the trip reports but we had peakbagging fever. I browsed the app and noticed several P100m objectives and we picked Danielsberg because it’s mostly a drive-up. Earlier in the day we had bagged Wöllaner Nock which is also quite shitty.

The obvious way to drive up Danielsberg was from the NW so we headed that way. The road was apparently under some construction that it was currently unpaved, but there was no gate nor any prohibitive sign, so we drove the rental 2WD to the uppermost parking area. This area seemed private to us and the last switchback or two had “no driving” kind of sign, but we plainly ignored that and parked and the uppermost lot nevertheless to conserve energy.

Due to the trespassing nature of this “hike” we sneaked behind some bushes and dashed up to what we thought was the highest point, but it was apparently not. I started to wonder around the trails behind the expensive/fancy lodge and Adam reluctantly followed. I discovered another forested high point that might or might not be higher, but the church to the south was definitely higher. After tagging the church I finally turned on the Peakbagger app and noticed Deividas’ trip report, which confirmed that we had indeed found the highest point. Adam showed up shortly after and even introduced me into the church. Of course I remembered absolutely nothing as I’m not a religious person at all.

The views were actually better than expected for a “peak” of this size, so we did spend some time up there. It also seemed to me that the area was not quite “private” so our presence was likely legal. We then leisurely walked back to the car and then quickly drove away. I still earned about half an hour’s time in a nearby McDonald’s before driving up towards the trail-head for Grossglocker.
