Genesse Mountain

2521m

Golden, CO

Genesse Mtn. is one of the foothills in the vicinity of Golden that actually boasts over 100 m prominence to qualify as a “peak”. I was looking for an easy objective to introduce Clair to the state of Colorado but I needed something that has enough prominence to be a “peak”, and at the same time should also have decent amount of height to at least provide some sort of acclimatization. Clair and Cheesecake flew over here for the long weekend and the primary objective would be Mt. Blue Sky, but I didn’t want to drive them straight from the airport to the 4350-m summit.

After picking them up from the airport we went for lunch and did some errands and I still thought we would have enough time to at least tag Genesse Mtn. before driving up Mt. Blue Sky. For some reasons I thought Genesse Mtn. would be a drive-up but I guess the road’s closed about a kilometer from the summit. That’s fine as doing a bit of exercise would be even better for the acclimatization purposes. It was a hot morning though, so the stoke level wasn’t quite high.

Cheesecake basically refused to walk in the heat so I had to carry him to the summit and back. There’s not much worth nothing about this “ascent”. We took the trail instead of plodding up the road. The grade was extremely gradual so it actually took a while. After tagging the summit we simply plodded back to the vehicle and carried on towards Mt. Blue Sky. Little did we know that there was actually an accident up on the mountain that caused a 6-hour closure. We were forced to do another acclimatization objectives namely Warrior Mtn. before proceeding onward.

Honestly this one is too short to qualify as a “hike”…
A view of the Front Range peaks. That’s probably Mt. Blue Sky actually
