“Halfmoon Peak”

“Halfmoon Peak” is the unofficial name of the bump overlooking Halfmoon Bay on Sechelt Peninsula. There’s no magic about this objective as it’s as simple as a “drive-up”. An AWD SUV with decent traction can go all the way to the summit. For the purists there are ways to “hike” this objective but honestly I wouldn’t bother. This dumpster-dive is lame by any measure and offers zero value beside the collection quantity. It does boast over 200 m prominence so it’s legit in the peakbagging community so at some point, I would have to do it…

I honestly had never thought about doing it. It requires a ferry crossing, offers absolutely no view and doesn’t even have an official name. But when I was stuck on the lower Sunshine Coast for a couple hours waiting for the ferries it started to make sense. This was on the way to Mt. Alfred by Powell River. Vlad suggested that we could drive to the top of “Halfmoon Peak”. I did some math work and sure enough, we would have enough time, but not with a lot of margin for errors. I simply followed the Google’s direction to the north side of the bump and then followed the obvious road shown on the Gaia’s topo map all the way to the summit. The driving was harder than I thought as I did turn on the X Mode a few times on a few insanely steep hills. As expected, there’s no view so we quickly drove down and resumed the travel to Powell River. My only suggestion is to not bother unless you’re in the irreversible stage 3 of the disorder.
