Gaisberg

1287m

Salzburg, Austria

Gaisberg is the hill dominating the eastern skyline of the city of Salzburg and boasts almost 600 m prominence. This is basically a “drive-up”. I had absolutely no clue about such peak until Adam casually mentioned it, while driving out of the rental car company. The main purpose of visiting Salzburg was to swap the rental car to a newer one as our current vehicle was already 3000 km overdue for a service. Adam browsed his Peakbagger app and immediately noticed Gaisberg being a “freebie”. I thought the driving direction wouldn’t make a lot of sense as we would be driving SW towards Birnhorn instead of eastwards across the city, but I couldn’t resist tagging a bonus peak.

Gaisberg drive-up and short walk. GPX DL

The crux was definitely the driving as we had to work our way across the middle of the city. The traffic was only moderately heavy, thankfully. I also accidently turned on the tracking in the Gaia GPS app but sure, why not keeping the entire driving track available for the future parties. My GPX recorded every road that we took from the airport’s car rental to the highest parking lot on Gaisberg. The best view was right next to the parking lot but the true summit required a bit of walking. We tagged the true summit for completion purposes and then drove towards Birnhorn, following Google’s direction. This short detour to check out Gaisberg exceeded my expectation. I would actually recommend this objective to anyone visiting Salzburg, whether you are a peakbagger or not.

Excellent views from slightly below the upper parking lot
Zwiesel (P1000m) and Hochstaufen
There were at least 20 paragliders around..
Berchtesgadener Hochthron is the highest peak in that massif to the SW
That same couple again
Me on the viewpoint (not true summit) of Gaisberg
This is the true summit of Gaisberg…
Walking back towards the parking lot
Adam plodding back. The weather’s better than expected overall.
