Reginald Hill

248m

Salt Spring Island, BC

Reginald Hill next to Fulford Harbour is one of the officially named pimples on Salt Spring Island and despite the lowly status, this one boasts over 100 m prominence making it “legit” by the international peak-bagging standard. There’s a trail that goes to the open bluffs not far from the summit. The forested true summit is viewless but requires minimal bushwhacking to attain. This turned out to be the last objective bagged in this 2-day Salt Spring Island trip. My original plan was to slam every single P100m objective on the island but I had to leave one or two behind due to time constraint. I had booked the dinner at Feast at 5:45 pm with Clair so there’s a hard deadline. Clair had been patiently waiting in the hotel room doing her thesis or projects while I went out alone to bag some peaks.

After tagging Bruce Peak, Mt. Tuam and Hope Hill I decided that I still had enough time to do one more objective before heading back. I picked Reginald Hill not far from Fulford Harbour as it required the least amount of driving detour. The ascent was no brainer but does require 200 m elevation gain. Most of the gain was done on the well-maintained trail. The viewpoint was not disappointing but I turned my attention to the viewless true summit. I thought I had to thrash quite a ways judging by the contour lines on the maps but the going turned out to be rather straightforward. The true summit was actually quite defined with a cairn.

Instead of backtracking to the viewpoint I made a direct dash due NW and intersected the trail below the bluffs. I then jogged and power walked back to the parking lot and drove back to the hotel, which was about halfway up on Mt. Maxwell. Clair and I then went for a fancy dinner at Feast, but the real crux of this trip was the ferries going home. I thought the 6 AM ferry would surely have empty spaces so we didn’t bother to show up half an hour prior to the departure time. As a result we lost our reservation and were turned around. Thankfully there’s an alternative solution. We drove to Fulford Harbour and lined up for the short ride towards Victoria, and then took the Vancouver Island ferry back to Tsawwassen. To my surprise the added cost was rather marginal.
